about

In my day job, I am an Professor at the Department of Art Studies at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, with an A.B. in Broadcast Communication from the University of the Philippines Diliman, an M.A. in Communication from the Ateneo de Manila University, and a Ph.D. in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

But I also have an intermittent parallel life in the music industry, as a professional musician, sound/music recording practitioner, and record producer for the U.P. Cherubim and Seraphim, Elena Mirano, KONTRAGAPI, Eraserheads, Dong Abay, Sugarfree, Peryodiko, and Bullet Dumas.

I coined the name “Makinao” from Filipino words “makina” (motor or engine) and “tao” (person) because I seek to articulate a balanced relationship between technology and humanity in my music. I’ve since used this as my musical nom de plume.
