Cymbals are popularly known as atonal, noisy, and bellicose instruments. But like many other acoustic instruments, their subtler sounds are often masked in contemporary ensemble music. Most drummers know of a cymbals’ sonic component called wash, a sustained sound which follows the initial attacking crash and ping, and lasts until its ultimate release. Wash is also accompanied by other sounds, such as ring which is in the high end of the sonic spectrum, and hum which occupies the lower end. All these sounds are delicate, complex, difficult to record, and often overlooked. The following works bring wash to the forefront, and reveals its dynamic interaction with other component cymbal sounds.

All the music on this album was premiered in “Underbelly,” an art installation at the Calle Wright Gallery, Manila, Philippines, from 22 March to 23 June 2019.
